Bioenergy is heat, electricity or gas produced from organic material, or also known as biomass. It is a form of renewable energy. This energy can be generated by burning, fermenting or gasifying biomass. Bioenergy is used as green energy or fuel to generate green energy.
Control Union has been actively servicing the bio-based energy business since the first introduction of biomass and biofuels as replacement for fossil fuels. We have built long-term relationships with all parties in the supply chain, including the Grain and Feed Trade Association (Gafta).
European Renewable Energy Directive
Produced in a sustainable manner
Biofuels, bioliquids and solid biomass should always be produced in a sustainable manner, contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gases.
The European Renewable Energy Directive, established a regulatory framework for the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources and sets that the biomass used for biofuel or bioenergy must be produced in a sustainable manner and be monitored through independent verification.

National legislation
Broad range of certifications
Control Union has built up long-term relationships with all parties in the bio-based commodities supply chain and offers a broad range of biofuel and biomass certifications.
Most of these are based on directives or national legislation existing in Europe and the USA.
ISCC – Certified Biomass and Bioenergy
The ISCC EU is the first and leading voluntary scheme based on the European Renewable Energy Directive (RED), covering the environmental and social aspects of biomass production. It is compatible with other RED schemes. In the supply chain, traceability is key to assuring the diligence of the system.

The DINplus A1 certification, which attests to compliance with international standards, allows companies to stand out in the market and prove the consistent quality of their wood pellets.

UER – Upstream Emission Reduction Verification
Following the EU Fuel Quality Directive (FQD), fuel suppliers in Europe are obliged to reduce the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of transport fuels by six percent in 2020, compared to the baseline of 2010. As an ISO 14065 accredited validation and verification body, Control Union Certifications Germany GmbH is recognised by the DEHst (Deutsche Emissionshandelsstelle) to execute validation and verification of UER projects.
