    About the standard

Control Union offers the Sedex Member Ethical Trade Audit (SMETA), a method developed by the multi-stakeholder consulting initiative Sedex.

The role of SMETA is to align social auditing standards with control practices, to ease the audit burden on suppliers, sharing reports and driving improvements in supply chain labor standards.

    Requirements

You must be a member of SEDEX in order to access the SMETA evaluation methodology. Companies or organizations from all industries that have five (5) or more workers on site and have at least three (3) months of having started their activities may apply.

    How you benefit

In the certification industry, various social audits such as BSCI, WRAP, SA 8000 and ICTI are performed. All of these social audits can be uploaded to SEDEX. It is up to each member to decide which audit best suits their purposes; however, SEDEX hopes that by publicly providing SMETA best practices, companies will ultimately establish a single international audit protocol.

Save time and money by sharing data with multiple customers at the same time.

Connect with potential customers and showcase your business through the member directory.

Access multiple training resources to help improve your team’s skills on social and environmental issues.

Become a more sustainable business by identifying priority areas for improvement.

SMETA 2-pillar audits are governed by the standards included in the basic ETI code. SMETA 4-pillar audits add more comprehensive environmental management requirements as well as business practices. Reporting can be done through the SEDEX database, depending on your requirements. Usually, eligible sites complete a self-assessment before audits begin. Ask for a pre-audit information package when you apply.
